Questions about which mode to use are heavily discussed by survey methodologists. In the book I’ve simplified the discussion to about six survey modes.

Meanwhile, a good place to start is the journal Survey Practice – whose current (June) issue happens to feature an article on paper versus web responses to a major health and employment study. The journal is open access so there is plenty to explore.
