Editing for the web: evidence-based tips and principles

Overview

You have your content and there is a wonderful web site design ready to accept it. But something isn't quite right. Maybe the content has come from many different sources. Maybe the writing style seems to be lacking something. Maybe it just doesn't seem inviting for the reader.

In this tutorial, we focus on evidence-based tips and principles for editing for the web. You will learn the nine steps of editing

  1. Principles for choosing appropriate content
  2. Slash and slash: cut what you don't need
  3. Pick out short and meaningful chunks
  4. Headings that communicate at a glance
  5. Put the headings in a logical order
  6. Write the messages under the headings
  7. Put the words in the messages into logical order
  8. Create visual order
  9. Link sparingly and wisely

Delivery Method

Interactive workshop based on working with examples of good and bad material.

Duration

Half a day

Pre-Requisites

Before the tutorial you are asked to supply two examples of writing for the web that you consider to be good, and two that require further improvement. We may use these and/or examples sumbitted by other attendees as material for the workshop.
